Janet Asimov Mind Transfer Ace 044153306X / 9780441533060 PAPERBACK Very Good 044153306X Editorial Reviews n nFrom Publishers Weekly nUsing the background of husband Isaac's classic robot stories of the '40s and '50s, Janet Asimov considers the possibilities and problems of the title technique: imprinting human minds on robot brains to give the aging and ill a second life. Naturally, there is a backlash, the rabid conservative movement called biofundamentalism. The novel is structured around the life, death and subsequent robotic existence of Adam Durant, who is born into a dynasty torn between "bioeffers" and pioneering roboticists. In a story crowded with incident (settling another star system, terrorist bombings, hyperdrive innovations, alien encounters), the interesting question of a robotic culture that doesn't imitate its human parent is not developed. Also appealing as an idea is the outlined family chronicle with robots as relatives, but the bland characters and rushed, chaotic plot weaken its impact. nCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom Library Journal nRoboticist Jonathan Durant's discoverythat human minds can be transferred into virtually immortal robot bodiessparks a war of politics and terror as "biofundamentalists" launch an all-out campaign to halt the progress of mind-transfer experiments by any means possible. Despite a strong pedantic streak, this novel by the co-author (with husband Isaac Asimov) of the "Norby" series offers intriguing speculations about the future of robotics, engaging characters, and a strong humanist outlook. For large sf collections. nCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Price:

Janet Asimov; Isaac Asimov Norby and Court Jester Ace 0441003419 / 9780441003419 PAPERBACK Very Good 0441003419 Editorial Reviews n nFrom School Library Journal nGrade 4-6-- Fans of the Norby books (Walker) and newcomers alike will enjoy this rollicking adventure. Space Cadet Jeff Wells and his robot Norby are planning a vacation on the planet Izz. Admiral Yobo, head of Jeff's academy, decides to join them to escape his federation duties. Thanks to Norby's ability to travel through hyperspace, the three are quickly dropped into the odd world of Izz, which will be familiar to readers of the previous books. Evil Ing has become court jester, and Jeff soon suspects him of hatching a plot to overthrow the monarchy. The story unfolds quickly, and the mystery element has just enough suspense to give readers a feeling of accomplishment when they solve it. For even reluctant readers with a computer interest, this is good fun and an excellent hook to other books in the series. --Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library nCopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom Kirkus Reviews nIn the tenth book about Jeff Wells and his appealing little robot, Norby, the two careen through time and space yet again. Jeff, Norby, and Admiral Boris Yobo travel to remote planet Izz, where--on the eve of the annual toy festival--trouble looms: Norby's robot-love Pera has vanished; Princess Rinda and her father are quarantined with Ickyspot; the Mainbrain One computer is acting erratic; and someone has introduced a computer game, Teenytrip, that has mesmerized the entire population into expecting major change. Suspicion centers on Ing, an Earth scoundrel exiled to Izz as court jester; worse, police chief Luka has fallen in love with him. But the villain is really beautiful singer Xeena, who turns out to be cousin to the queen, and who- -using what looks like a hairpin but is actually a computer key- -has awakened Mainbrain Two in a plot to take her rightful place in the royal family. All is resolved: Xeena is welcomed, Ing and Luka are united, and the expectations for change are satisfied by introducing parliamentary rule. That all clear? Part old-fashioned Saturday movie serial, part G&S operetta, and all preposterous: good, clean fun, and the loose ends can go into another book. Janet Asimov Notes for a Memoir: On Isaac Asimov, Life, And Writing Prometheus Books 1591024056 / 9781591024057 Hardcover Fine 1591024056 Editorial Reviews n nFrom Publishers Weekly nAlthough a psychiatrist by profession, fiction writer Asimov resists the temptation to over-analyze her relationship with husband Isaac Asimov, the prolific science fiction writer, in this lively nonfiction narrative. Keeping her recollections light and warm, with occasional interjections like, "I stopped listening and kissed him," Asimov focuses on the vitality of her subject. Apart from an occasionally grating know-it-all narrative voice, Asimov's memoir is a readable testament to a happy, productive union between two intelligent and creative individuals. Asimov celebrates the fame of Isaac's career, but also documents smaller successes, prioritizing the colorful-and nearly frivolous-tidbits that characterize their daily life ("I hope no reader of this book minds that I'm including what Isaac called maunderings and potterings. I hope the readers will also see his meaning"). She also takes time to describe her own formative years, her career, and her intense grief following Isaac's death. Readers familiar with Isaac Asimov the writer will enjoy his wife's take on Isaac Asimov the man, from his tireless sense of humor to his extraordinary intellectual capabilities, as well as his unusual role as leading man in a touching love story. nCopyright ? Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. n nFrom Booklist nIt goes without saying that Janet Asimov's career has been overshadowed by that of her late husband, sf grand master Isaac Asimov, whose life she recently surveyed in a one-volume abridgment of his tripartite autobiography. Although her primary livelihood is that of a respected New York psychiatrist, her essays and stories in this collection reveal a literary intelligence every bit as sharp as that of her famous spouse. In a score of rambling yet engaging essays, she casts a capacious net over such diverse themes as the importance of imagination in living and writing, her experiences as a psychoanalyst, and the heavyweight topics of religion, philosophy, and sex. Isaac's fans will be pleased by the abundance of amusing anecdotes she tells about him, including reminiscences of the many train rides they took because of his aversion to flying. If the handful of fiction that rounds out the volume mostly echoes motifs of her husband's work, such as robotics and puns, she impresses with her knack for entertaining while informing.
