Barbara Delinsky Flirting with Pete: A Novel Pocket Books 0743469844 / 9780743469845 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Good 0743469844 Editorial Reviews n nFrom Publishers Weekly nCassandra (Casey) Ellis, 34, a single, successful psychotherapist, is the newest of this prolific writer's heroines. The novel opens with a memorial service for Dr. Cornelius Unger, a brilliant and reclusive psychologist who is also Casey's father. She never knew him personally, since she was the product of her mother's single encounter with Unger, and is shocked to learn that Dr. Unger has left her a $3 million townhouse on Boston's Beacon Hill, complete with a maid, Meg, and a gardener, Jordan. Casey has always felt hostile toward her famous, mysterious father, even though her mother never expressed any anger. She's uneasy at first about living in a luxurious house haunted by her father's presence, but soon finds its meticulously attended gardens a source of relief from professional stress and the emotional turmoil of caring for her mother, left comatose after a recent accident. Moreover, she is attracted to handsome, virile Jordan. While she's rooting through Dr. Unger's personal papers, she comes across the story of Jenny Clyde, a young woman in her 20s who was abused by her father for years before being rescued by a police officer. Casey becomes intrigued: is this incestuous relationship fiction or one of Dr. Unger's case histories? Why did her father leave it for her to find? Delinsky (The Woman Next Door, etc.) weaves Jenny's story through the novel, and meshes her and Casey's fates in a melodramatic climax. Both stories have some lapses in credibility and underdeveloped supporting characters (Meg is particularly weak), but the plot is more sophisticated and fast-moving than some of Delinsky's earlier work. It will satisfy her fans and may even win her some new readers. nCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. n nFrom Booklist nCasey Ellis has spent her life longing for the father she never knew. Jenny Clyde has spent hers loathing the father she knew all too well. Casey's father is a noteworthy psychologist named Cornelius Unger; Jenny's is a notorious prisoner, Darden Clyde. When Unger dies, he bequeaths Casey more than just his luxurious Beacon Hill townhouse; she also inherits his cook, gardener, and random segments of Jenny's disturbing diary, a bewildering chronicle written prior to Jenny's mysterious disappearance in the company of a shadowy young man known only as Pete. Darden is about to be released from prison for the murder of Jenny's mother, and his imminent arrival permeates Jenny's abject account of her life spent in fear of his psychological and sexual abuse. Hoping to solve the puzzling connection between this tortured young woman and her enigmatic father, Casey follows the journal's tantalizing clues in search of not only Jenny's identity and whereabouts but also her own familial relationships. Fantasy battles reality in Delinsky's emotive novel of discovery and denial, love and liberation. Seamlessly and compassionately weaving Jenny's unsettling past with Casey's uncertain future, Delinsky delivers a scintillating study of each woman's search for answers and absolution. Barbara Delinsky Three Wishes Pocket Books 0671016652 / 9780671016654 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Very Good 0671016652 From School Library Journal nYA?On a bitterly cold October evening, a truck skids across icy roads into a car that slides uncontrollably into pedestrian Bree Miller. The driver, Tom Gates, spends days helping the woman recover both at the hospital and later at her home. As they fall in love, Bree eventually tells Tom about her near-death, out-of-body experience and her recollection that she has been granted three wishes by the Being of Light she met during the episode. Once the three wishes are granted, she feels that she will die once more. Bree uses one wish as a test but the result is ambiguous, so she can't be sure if it is luck or the true power of the granted wish. It is only after her death that Tom has the hindsight to see that Bree's three wishes had been granted. Delinsky draws detailed portraits of her characters, from physical attributes to personalities. The picture-perfect, small-town Vermont setting is effectively drawn. The mystery of Bree's mother's identity adds another layer to the intriguing plot. For YAs who are fond of Lurlene McDaniel's novels, Delinsky's book is a natural progression into adult writing of the same genre. Price:

Barbara Delinsky Together Alone HarperTorch 0061092819 / 9780061092817 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Good 0061092819 Editorial Reviews n nFrom Publishers Weekly nThe author of For My Daughters sallies into Judith Krantz and Iris Rainer Dart territory with this somewhat familiar tale of angst among girlfriends. With their daughters off to college, Emily, Kay and Celeste find themselves emotionally adrift in their small Massachusetts town. Emily retreats to baking and redecorating to hide the pain of husband Doug's infrequent (and sexually chilly) visits home, while eighth-grade teacher Kay uses her work as a shield against her police chief husband's attempts to recapture their former intimacy. And divorcee Celeste celebrates her daughter's departure with a nose job and a personal ad she hopes will bring her "wine and roses and music and poetry. And sex." When recently widowed NYPD detective Brian Stasek arrives to join the local police force, Emily becomes drawn to him-and increasingly suspicious about Doug's absences. Celeste, meanwhile, finds an architect who may be too good to be true and Kay, certain that her body has lost its allure, continues to rebuff her baffled husband. Only when Brian reopens the long-closed case of one couple's kidnapped son does Delinsky's story manage a spark that keeps it from being just another suburban melodrama. nCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nProduct Description n nEmily, Kay and Celeste have been best friends forever. Their daughters are close, too, but all the girls are off to college now, and the mothers must redefine themselves as women. n nEmily, once half of the perfect marriage, hardly knows her workaholic husband Doug anymore. What she wants so badly from him is being offered by her new neighbor, a widower with heart, soul, and grit. Kay, a dedicated teacher, still loves her job, but her husband John is making unfamiliar demands of her, demands that confuse her and make her wonder about their future together. n nCeleste, long-divorced, is ecstatic with freedom. She searches for the perfect man, but when her daughter is endangered, her electric new life looks terribly dim. As the most precious parts they've hidden for years suddenly demand to be heard, these three women must learn to love themselves. n nA beautiful tapestry of life, love, and acceptance, Barbara Delinsky expertly interweaves these three stories in a glorious work that is at once moving, romantic, and real.
