3 Belva Plain Legacy of Silence
Dell 0440226406 / 9780440226406 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Good
0440226406 Editorial Reviews n nAmazon.com Review nTake sibling rivalry, Nazi Germany, and a basement full of familial secrets, and you've got the makings for Legacy of Silence, the saga of two sisters' lives. It's Berlin in 1939, and lovely Caroline Hartzinger and Lore, her unattractive adopted sister, are forced to escape to Switzerland. To make matters more heinous, their parents don't survive, Caroline's pregnant, and her lover mysteriously disappears. Eventually, the two women immigrate to the United States and try to begin new lives, but their painful past continues to haunt them and becomes unavoidable when a love interest comes between them. n nFrom Library Journal nDana Ivey reads clearly and convincingly this sprawling novel tracing the long lives of two stepsisters who escape from Germany during the Nazi era. They settle in a small town in western New York, where they quickly become part of the community. Caroline, the youngest, pregnant by a German whom she believes jilted her, forges a new life, complete with a husband, two daughters, and a thriving restaurant business. Lore, the elder, resumes her nursing career and serves as beloved sister/aunt to the family. But setbacks occur, and the revelation of a secret deception provides a surprise ending. Plain, with 15 best sellers including Crescent City (Audio Reviews, LJ 6/15/92, and Treasures (Audio Reviews, LJ 5/15/92) to her credit, has attempted an epic spanning three generations. However, this abridged version feels segmented and superficial, never fully engaging readers in the characters' lives. The tape quality, however, is excellent. Devotees of Plain will enjoy the book. 4 Belva Plain Secrecy
Dell 0440225116 / 9780440225119 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Good
0440225116 Editorial Reviews n nFrom Library Journal nPlain, who has seemingly inflicted every trauma possible on the hard-luck but resilient subjects of her best-selling novels, here tells of a brilliant young woman who is haunted by the trauma of date rape. nCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom Kirkus Reviews nPlain returns, this time with the story of a young rape victim struggling to overcome obstacles to intimacy and true love. There's also a clammy subplot having to do with a missing person and the infiltration by the mob of an industrial site belonging to an old New England family. Charlotte Dawes is raped at 14 by her cousin-by-marriage, the randy Ted, son of her uncle Cliff's new wife, Claudia, whose first husband was shot in--where else?--Chicago. When Charlotte becomes pregnant, then, her father and her romantic adventuress mother are wild with rage. Both are beside their daughter's bedside as she recovers from an operation for a ruptured tubal pregnancy. In the meantime, Ted continues to assault women and is finally arrested and indicted for rape and kidnapping. Home on bail, he escapes in the night. (Reports from abroad of Ted-sightings occur now and then.) Skip to Manhattan eight years later, where adult Charlotte works for an architectural firm. She loves her work but despairs of forming a firm relationship with a man, sex-shy as she is. She designs for her own pleasure a ``public square'' fit for the Dawes's now shuttered mill. Unfortunately, her family has inadvertently leased the mill to a polluting waste-disposal firm, to the anger of the town and the despair of the Daweses. Then Charlotte meets the dashing Roger Heywood, whose family deals in commercial real estate. Roger is not only able to come up with the ready cash to finance Charlotte's project, but (of course) coaxes her out of her trauma-related fear of sex. Finally, Claudia, trading on her late husband's mob connections, talks a boss out of retaining the mill. Looks like smooth sailing for the lovers, but disaster threatens again in the form of a flood and a potential terrible discovery. Plain Plain (Promises, 1986, etc.), but nonetheless name- anointed for success. (Literary Guild main selection; author tour) -- Copyright ?1997, Kirkus Associates, LP.
