Jerome Charyn Marilyn the Wild Bloomsbury 0747507260 / 9780747507260 PAPERBACK Very Good 0747507260 Review nThis feisty and fascinating tale was first published in Britain in 1990, just one of more than 30 books Jerome Charyn has to his credit. Like many of them, it focuses on New York, the city of his birth, and his portrayal of its mean streets. His concise style of writing pulls no punches, and this story is all the better for that. All manner of city life stalks these pages, from a prostitute with welts on her knees to a grisly cop who thrives on a harsh word from his boss. The story focuses in particular on that boss, Isaac Sidel, one of the hardest, meanest and 'most incorruptible' cops in the business, whose biggest problem is his daughter, a razor-sharp 20-something who 'sheds husbands in the winter'. The eponymous heroine (for want of a better description) of the story, she soon sets her sights on Manfred Coen, her father's sidekick. If that wasn't bad enough, Marilyn becomes the target of a vicious gang who want to get to her father, and then things rapidly get out of control for everyone. The complexity of family relationships and encounters in the Jewish slums of New York are brought to life by Charyn's wonderfully agile prose, sharing the page comfortably with brains that are 'swollen with gin' and wine that growls in the throat. Fairly graphic - sometimes rough, cruel and unpleasant - sex and the coarsest of language are de rigueur, and if you don't mind any of that then you'll doubtlessly relate to what is an exceptionally entertaining read. Packed with hard and expertly crafted characters and a plot that fairly sprints along, this is great, gritty fun. (Kirkus UK) n nIn this self-contained sequel to Charyn's Blue Eyes everybody wears a black hat. Rupert Weil, a fifteen-year-old psychotic, stalks New York City in savage pursuit of Isaac the Pure, a supercop who takes nothing off nobody. Rupert's motives are thin at best, so they must be accepted on faith - a faith in madness. The Grand Guignol supporting cast indulges itself in a dazzling variety of physical mayhem, brutalizing sex and oral abuse. The shock value of these activities palls, since this is all anyone ever does in spite of an overlay of sentimentality which rings false. The threads come together in the end, but it's too late: the reader is glutted. The author is at his best - and very good it is - in conveying the intrusive palpability of the city (e.g., there is a marvelously horrific blizzard). But finally, Charyn's disgust with and loathing of his cripples does him in. If his message is that Fun City is, in fact, Kill City, then he's probably been too successful.
