Len Deighton Berlin Game HarperCollins Distribution Services 0586074007 / 9780586074008 PAPERBACK Good 0586074007 From Library Journal nThe smoothness with which narrator Robert Whitfield handles the wide array of foreign accents adds an international flavor to this suspenseful espionage thriller. One of Britain's most valued and productive spies wants to defect to the West after decades of service. He has requested that Bernard Samson, a veteran British intelligence agent who now enjoys the safety of his senior level desk job, help him escape. Samson is obliged to undertake the project since the spy saved his life when he was a field agent in East Berlin long ago. When Samson discovers evidence that the KGB has infiltrated British intelligence, he knows he must move quickly to return to Cold War-era East Berlin before his colleague's identity is exposed. Deighton's (Spy Sinker, Audio Reviews, LJ 4/15/95) dignified narrative style gives the program a properness that is characteristic of high-level government proceedings. A worthwhile purchase for most public libraries.?Mark P. Tierney, Charles Cty. Pub. Schs., Waldorf, MD nCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition. n nFrom AudioFile nIn the first of Len Deighton's espionage sextet, he introduces his enduring spy hero, Bernard Samson. Not only is Deighton setting up characters who go through the entire series, but Daneman must also set a vocal style for each of Samson's Berlin friends and English co-patriots. Daneman succeeds masterfully. His lively characterizations of the elegant Silas Gaunt, irritating Dicky Cruyer and mercurial Werner Volkmann are a delight. The dialogue is lively with each character's voice wholly distinct. As often happens at the end, one wants more time with these characters--and there is. R.F.W. Len Deighton Billion Dollar Brain Harpercollins Pb 0586044280 / 9780586044285 PAPERBACK Very Good 0586044280 Editorial Reviews n nProduct Description nThe classic spy thriller of lethal computer-age intrigue and a maniac's private cold war, featuring the same anonymous narrator and milieu of The IPCRESS File. n nThe fourth of Deighton's novels to be narrated by the unnamed employee of WOOC(P) is the thrilling story of an anti-communist espionage network owned by a Texan billionaire, General Midwinter, run from a vast computer complex known as the Brain. After having been recruited by Harvey Newbegin, the narrator travels from the bone-freezing winter of Helsinki, Riga and Leningrad, to the stifling heat of Texas, and soon finds himself tangling with enemies on both sides of the Iron Curtain. --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition. n nFrom AudioFile nLen Deighton's latest spy story has a totally implausible plot full of anti-communist fanatics, double agents and a computer which gives the operatives their instructions. It thankfully contains a large measure of wry humor and skepticism which help the listener appreciate the spoof. Paul Daneman takes on the international cast of British, Russian and American characters like old friends. His wide range of accents identify each speaker though the women and children sound a bit silly with squeaky voices. Daneman's pace follows the action and he performs with a polished smoothness and professionalism. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition. Price:

Len Deighton Bomber HarperCollins Publishers 0586045449 / 9780586045442 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Very Good 0586045449 Editorial Reviews n nReview n'A massively different novel... the effect is -- quite literally -- devastating' Sunday Times 'A massive and superbly mobilised tragedy of the machines which men create to destroy themselves... masterly and by far Mr Deighton's best'. Douglas Hurd, The Spectator 'A magnificent story... the characters lean out of the pages' Daily Mirror 'For sheer readability he has no peer' The Standard 'The magnificent Bomber is rich with historical detail' The Times 'A master of fictional espionage.' Daily Mail 'The poet of the spy story.' Sunday Times n nProduct Description nThe classic novel of the Second World War that relates in devastating detail the 24-hour story of an allied bombing raid. Bomber is a novel war. There are no victors, no vanquished. There are simply those who remain alive, and those who die. Bomber follows the progress of an Allied air raid through a period of twenty-four hours in the summer of 1943. It portrays all the participants in a terrifying drama, both in the air and on the ground, in Britain and in Germany. In its documentary style, it is unique. In its emotional power it is overwhelming. Len Deighton has been equally acclaimed as a novelist and as an historian. In Bomber he has combined both talents to produce a masterpiece. Price:

Len Deighton Charity (Faith, Hope & Charity Trilogy) Harpercollins 0006479006 / 9780006479000 PAPERBACK Very Good 0006479006 Editorial Reviews n nAmazon.com Review nAfter steering master spy Bernard Samson through Faith and Hope, Len Deighton wraps up his trilogy with a predictable dose of Charity. Although the beleaguered spook has plenty of intrigue to deal with, this installment seems more diffuse and less plot-driven than its predecessors. Still, Deighton fans will probably enjoy the resolution of several outstanding cliffhangers, including the likelihood of a decent retirement package for the protagonist. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom Publishers Weekly nWith this successor to Faith and Hope, British spy Bernard Samson has used up nine lives as the hero of three trilogies. Yet he, and Deighton, remain full of vitality. In his latest depiction of the hermetic world of English spies, "all those inscrutable public-school ruffians," Deighton brings us up to 1988. Because Deighton's work is an evolving saga of spycraft channeled through Samson's life and times, readers unfamiliar with the earlier books may feel like newcomers at a dinner party for old friends. As Deighton regulars appear-including Samson's tortured, rising intelligence star, Fiona; her vulgar father; department members Dicky, Bret and Gloria; Samson's mentor, Silas; and his boyhood pal, Werner-there's a lot of hashing and re-hashing of old and new murders, a dying ex-spy and a missing lockbox. Quickly enough, all readers will be swept up by the complicated plot and by Samson's sly asides: "Maps are of course the decor adopted by men reluctant to display their taste in art"; an American Anglophile's car "was tall and angular, built in those days before every Rolls wanted to squat down and look like a Mercedes." Despite an ending that is surprisingly mild, this tale, like those before it, is well crafted and reliably satisfying. $100,000 ad/promo; simultaneous HarperPaper publication of Hope; U.K., translation rights: Brie Burkeman; first serial and dramatic rights: Jonathan Clowes. nCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Len Deighton London Match Grafton 0586066357 / 9780586066355 PAPERBACK Good 0586066357 From Publishers Weekly nWinding up the tense story begun in Berlin Game and continued in Mexico Set, Deighton's new thriller follows British intelligence agent Bernard Samson as he careens between troubled spots in Berlin and London. Bernard's recent triumph is persuading the KGB's renowned spy Erich Stennis to defect to England but, since Samson's wife Fiona has gone over to the Russians, he isn't entirely trusted by his colleagues. Now suspicions that another mole has been planted among the operatives in London exacerbate Samson's fears, mostly for his small children, if he is accused. Determined to protect himself from his own fellow workers and the wily plots of Fiona and the KGB, Samson plunges into harrowing situations, climaxing in a bloody battle which both sides claim they've won. Actually, as Samson reveals, everybody loses in the deadly game of espionage. 100,000 first printing; Literary Guild selection. January 3 nCopyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom Library Journal nIn this conclusion to his spy trilogy, Deighton's preoccupation is defection and betrayal, just as it was in the popular earlier volumes, Berlin Game and Mexico Set. But readers need not be familiar with those books to enjoy this one. The plot centers on whether a KGB defector is actually a Soviet plant, and whether there is another Russian mole hidden high up in British Intelligence. Deighton can be a master at creating a tingly sense of deepening tension in the cold and dark of Berlin or in the equally dangerous but deceptively polite office politics of London Central. The suspense tightens steadily to the final showdown, which unfortunately is something of a disappointment. Not quite on the level of Le Carre's Smiley trilogy, with its similar themes and plot twists, but surely essential reading for all espionage fans. Literary Guild main selection. Len Deighton Spy Sinker (Hook Line & Sinker) Grafton 0586068996 / 9780586068991 PAPERBACK Very Good 0586068996 Editorial Reviews n nFrom Publishers Weekly nThe final volume in Deighton's hook, line and sinker espionage trilogy will likely disappoint even his staunchest fans with its passionless, unsuspenseful scenario for explaining the political liberation of Eastern Europe at the end of the '80s. Bernard Sampson, protagonist of the earlier books, here steps backstage as his wife, Fiona, defects to East Germany after being groomed as a double agent. In place, Fiona is set to implement a plan facilitating the westward defection of East German professionals, leaving a gap in the economic structure which is expected to defeat the Communist regime. Fiona's abandonment of her husband and two young children occurs with little drama or conflict, and is a move no more convincing than the doubts Deighton later visits upon her. The plan conceived by Bret Rensselaer, deputy controller of European economics for Britain's SIS, to dismantle the Wall is intriguing and plausible, but its fictional execution is without force. At his best with action scenes, Deighton gives us too few; only those that begin and end his tale ring with excitement and suspense. 250,000 first printing; $250,000 ad/promo. nCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nReview n'All done with the chilling competence we expect from Mr Deighton!
