FREDERICK FORSYTH DAY OF THE JACKAL CORGI 0552091219 / 9780552091213 PAPERBACK Fair 0552091219 Review nAfter the advent of the spy novel, it was Forsyth who 're-internationalized' the thriller and reintroduced the broad political background missing since John Buchan. The Jackal triumphantly makes us empathize with a cold-blooded assassin, and believe in the possibility of his success in killing de Gaulle, even when we know Le General died in his bed! (Kirkus UK) n nThe Jackal is the code name of a hired killer whose anonymity will be all that's left to him in an unmarked grave at Pete Lachaise. Before he gets there - and it's a helluva before - he's been promised a half a million dollars by the OAS to bring off the assassination of De Gaulle. It would seem that he couldn't miss with the special rifle he has made for him down to the last crossed hair - or with three sets of false papers (Danish, American and French) and three sets of contact lenses to conceal his normally expressionless eyes. This then is a tracer to get him before he gets to De Gaulle and it's quite exciting. The Jackal's a nerveless type who kills all along the route. A paraprocedural documentary which you can read at 140 kilometers per hour, and it will be hurried along by the B.O.M. and attendant promotion to assumed success. (Kirkus Reviews) n nProduct Description nOne of the most celebrated thrillers ever written, The Day of the Jackal is the electrifying story of an anonymous Englishman who in, the spring of 1963, was hired by Colonel Marc Rodin, Operations Chief of the O. A. S., to assassinate General de Gaulle. --This text refers to the Paperback edition. Price:

Frederick Forsyth The Negotiator Corgi 0552134759 / 9780552134750 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Very Good 0552134759 From Publishers Weekly nThe reader almost despairs of a story getting under way in Forsyth's latest: the situation takes so long to set up, and is mired in such wearisome detail. Finally, after it has been made clear that both a renegade Soviet military group and a fanatical Texan oil baron plan to take over an oil-rich Middle Eastern state for their different twisted reasons, the action begins. The son of the American president (who is about to sign a major arms agreement with Gorbachev himself) is kidnapped, and, despite the best efforts of Quinn, the negotiator, is killed at the very moment of his ransoming. The president is stricken, a takeover of the U.S. government looms, and it looks as if the treaty is doomed. Now it is up to Quinn to find out who was behind the crime, and why. With a plucky and pretty female FBI agent, he scours obscure corners of northern Europe for the perpetrators--always to find them dead just as he arrives. In a cliffhanger of a conclusion, he brings the guilt home to Washington, the president perks up and the world is saved. As always, Forsyth is good at the details (you learn more about Dutch and Belgian road maps than you probably ever wanted to know), keeps a few surprises up his sleeve and writes action scenes more crisply, and with less gore, than Ludlum. But his characterization is flat, and much of The Negotiator is terribly familiar. By far the best parts are the negotiations for the ransoming of the president's son, which generate real tension. Frederick Forsyth The Phantom of Manhattan Corgi Books 0552147192 / 9780552147194 PAPERBACK Very Good 0552147192 Review n 'Frederick Forsyth not only captures the spirit and style of Gaston Leroux's original novel, but also the romance and thrilis that make the Phantom such an alluring character' - Andrew Lloyd-Webber 'A gripping, one-sitting read that reveals Forsyth in a surprising and beguiling new light' - Sunday Telegraph n nProduct Description nIt was 1882 when Antoinette Giry, Maitresse du Corps de Ballet at the Paris Opera House, took her small daughter to the funfair at Neuilly. And there, in a cage, she saw a filthy manacled creature whose tormented eyes shone from a grotesquely deformed face. It was Antoinette Giry who saved him, freed him, cured his wounds and finally let him find a dwelling place in the labyrinthine depths of the Opera House. The creature - Erik - whose hideous face hid a brilliant brain of near-genius, was to become the Phantom of the Opera - magician, artists, musician, and lover. When he tried to lure the object of his adoration to his underground domain - it was to end in tragedy. It was Madame Giry who saved him once more, set him on a ship to the New World - and there Erik Muhlheim began a new and secret life, a life that began in misery and poverty but in which his incredible skills finally carved out an unexpected kingdom of power. And there it was he learned again of Christine, whose life had changed dramatically since that night in the Paris Opera House. Inevitably, their paths must cross again in the old sequence of tragedy and triumph. The Phantom, one of the most mysterious and romantic figures ever created, soars again in a world of his own making. Frederick Forsyth's magnificent and evocative story adds a new dimension to the legend of the Phantom. Price:

Frederick Forsyth The Veteran Bantam Press 059304892X / 9780593048924 Hardcover Very Good 059304892X Editorial Reviews n nAmazon Review nPenzler Pick, September 2001: Frederick Forsyth is known as the bestselling author of classic thrillers such as The Day of the Jackal and The Odessa File, among others. He is far less known as one of our premier short story writers (even though he won an Edgar for There Are No Snakes in Ireland), so it is a pleasure to have a new book from this superb storyteller. n nThe Veteran tells the story of an incident in one of the seedier parts of London. A Ugandan shopkeeper witnesses the mugging of a middle-aged man by two thugs. The shopkeeper has a perfect view of the crime so, when the man dies of his injuries, it would appear that the two thugs, now up on a murder charge, will be convicted. But justice does not always come easily, and it comes in many guises. n nThe Art of the Matter recounts an ingenious and deliciously satisfying art scam. The twists and turns are breathlessly entertaining and just when you think it's over, there's one more way for the bad guys to get their comeuppance. The Miracle tells the story of an American couple in Siena on their way to a festival. They are stopped when a stranger tells them the story of the courtyard in which they stand. Some very wonderful things happened right there during the Second World War. Will the couple get to the festival? Will they care? n nThe Citizen is a heart-stopping suspense story set on board a flight from Bangkok to London. We get to know the flight crew and some of the passengers very well, and they are not all who they might appear to be. And Whispering Wind, the longest story in the book, is a very ambitious piece about the Battle of Little Big Horn and what came later for several of the participants. n nEach of the stories in this volume is Forsyth in top form. The writing exceeds expectations, the stories are never less than compelling, and the suspense in each of them is nonstop. --Otto Penzler --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom Library Journal nThis collection of four short stories and a novella may disappoint readers expecting one of Forsyth's international thrillers but not anyone looking for a good read. What is surprising is the thematic and geographical range of these pieces, all narrated in a solid realist style with sharply observed detail and engrossing, sometimes surprising plots. Always suspenseful, the stories take us into disparate worlds. The Veteran features London thugs, the police, and the courts, whereas The Art of the Matter, a highly entertaining tale of revenge, delves into the world of auction houses. The Miracle, which takes us to an Italian hill town during World War II, is related as if by a medieval fabulist but with its own modern twist, while The Citizen, perhaps the least successful story, portrays drug smuggling via an airline flight. Most startling of all is Whispering Wind, Forsyth's tale of the Indian wars in 1876, in which we discover that a frontier scout survived the massacre at the Little Bighorn. The scout's love for a Cheyenne woman, a magical tale that spans two different historical periods, makes for compulsive reading. Recommended for all collections of popular fiction. n- Ronnie H.
