Robert Louis Stevenson Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Classic, 60s) Penguin (Non-Classics) 014600177X / 9780146001772 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Very Good 014600177X From the Publisher nThis story of a double-life in which the protagonist by day worked as a respectable doctor and by night roamed the back alleys of old-town London, was first published as a 'shilling shocker' in 1886 and became an instant classic. In the first six months of publication 40,000 copies were sold, and it remains one of the best tales ever written about the divided self. The story opens with Mr Utterson the lawyer learning of an inexplicable attack on a young girl by a certain Mr Hyde, who he knows to be a protege of his old friend Henry Jekyll. Deciding to discover more about the matter, he questions those who might know something and finally manages to speak to Hyde himself. Though it sounds like the beginning of a detective story, the reader is already aware that things are deeper than they might appear: those who meet Hyde feel an irrational hatred and are unable to describe him in any detail. And the language of the text itself seems to be hiding something: vague, ambiguous, at times opaque and full of repetitions. Something is going on here, but we're not sure what it is. In the end, after Hyde has committed a murder, a distressed Jekyll locks himself in his study; but when Utterson breaks down the door, he finds not Jekyll but the dead body of Hyde. He also discovers a document which, along with another already acquired from the last two chapters, explains many things - but not all. This new edition contains a substantial introduction, with the story of composition (amid difficulties), first publication and early reception, followed by a survey of the main critical interpretations of this much-discussed work, a brief study of its language, and an overview of the most important derivative works: stage plays, films, comic books, graphic novels, and retellings of various kinds. n nPublishers Weekly nMattotti and his longtime collaborator Kramsky return to the comix world with an interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of gothic horror. While the story is set in Victorian England, Mattotti's artwork evokes the masterful expressionism of Berlin of the 1930s and such influences as Max Beckman, George Grosz and Giorgio de Chirico. Dr. Jekyll's obsession with the duality of the human personality-the good and evil that reside within-leads him to concoct the potion that brings out his purely evil side. Depicting this transformation, Mattotti's art becomes even more expressive, reminiscent of the later paintings of Francis Bacon. Jekyll's assertion that with his potion Life would be relieved of all that is horrible proves wrong. Indeed, he has distilled life's horrors in the person of the brutal Mr. Hyde, who haunts the nightclubs, parties, darkened streets and brothels of London, a perfect vehicle for Mattotti's masterful command of color, composition and mood. An accomplished colorist, Mattotti saturates the book's pages with a rich palette, and each panel is beautiful and expressive. Kramsky's adept condensation of Stevenson's book appropriates snatches of the original text verbatim, maintaining the power of Stevenson's prose while using a minimum amount of text. This is an impressive and vivid interpretation of Stevenson's timeless tale of the human spirit. (Apr.) Robert Louis Stevenson Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Wadsworth Collection) Wordsworth Editions Ltd 1853260614 / 9781853260612 PAPERBACK Good 1853260614 Editorial Reviews n nAmazon.com Review nThe young Robert Louis Stevenson suffered from repeated nightmares of living a double life, in which by day he worked as a respectable doctor and by night he roamed the back alleys of old-town Edinburgh. In three days of furious writing, he produced a story about his dream existence. His wife found it too gruesome, so he promptly burned the manuscript. In another three days, he wrote it again. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was published as a "shilling shocker" in 1886, and became an instant classic. In the first six months, 40,000 copies were sold. Queen Victoria read it. Sermons and editorials were written about it. When Stevenson and his family visited America a year later, they were mobbed by reporters at the dock in New York City. Compulsively readable from its opening pages, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is still one of the best tales ever written about the divided self. n nThis University of Nebraska Press edition is a small, exquisitely produced paperback. The book design, based on the original first edition of 1886, includes wide margins, decorative capitals on the title page and first page of each chapter, and a clean, readable font that is 19th-century in style. Joyce Carol Oates contributes a foreword in which she calls Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a "mythopoetic figure" like Frankenstein, Dracula, and Alice in Wonderland, and compares Stevenson's creation to doubled selves in the works of Plato, Poe, Wilde, and Dickens. n nThis edition also features 12 full-page wood engravings by renowned illustrator Barry Moser. Moser is a skillful reader and interpreter as well as artist, and his afterword to the book, in which he explains the process by which he chose a self-portrait motif for the suite of engravings, is fascinating. For the image of Edward Hyde, he writes, "I went so far as to have my dentist fit me out with a carefully sculpted prosthetic of evil-looking teeth. But in the final moments I had to abandon the idea as being inappropriate. It was more important to stay in keeping with the text and, like Stevenson, not show Hyde's face." (Also recommended: the edition of Frankenstein illustrated by Barry Moser) --Fiona Webster --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom School Library Journal nGr 4-8?Francis has done a careful job of retelling the originals in a concise if somewhat uninspired manner. In particular, she uses the epistolary styles of the original Dracula and Frankenstein in her retelling while using simple language and plot summaries that children will follow with ease. Students who read these books would be able to summarize the stories' main points, but may be left in the dark as to why these classics are held in such reverence, as the style is more reportage than fiction. Contributing to the dry tone are low-quality illustrations that lack detail and are unlikely to draw children's attention. There are helpful appendixes and introductions, however. ?Graphic Classic? (Eureka) is a similar series with broader appeal to this age group.?Jane Cronkhite, Santa Clara County Library, CA?(c) Copyright 2010. Robert Louis Stevenson El Dr. Jekyll Y Mr. Hyde / Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Literatura) (Spanish Edition) Alianza Editorial Sa 8420634441 / 9788420634449 PAPERBACK New 8420634441 Synopsis nIn Robert Louis Stevenson's nightmarish, suspenseful, and deeply disturbing novel, Dr. Jekyll experiments with a drug that splits his personality into good and evil elements. Gradually, he loses control of the process and finds himself slipping more and more frequently into the guise of the evil and depraved Hyde. Finally, Hyde is accused of murder, and the good doctor, tormented by the struggle between good and evil that he embodies, is forced into an act of violence by his tortured conscience. Narrated by several onlookers, as well as by Jekyll himself, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, one of the earliest horror tales (1886), is arguably the most famous horror story ever written; the concept of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to signify a split personality has become deeply embedded in the public consciousness, even for those who have never read the book. It has, of course, been dramatized numerous times in numerous ways; it has prompted many interpretations since its publication in 1886, including the view that it was a precursor of Freud's work on the ego and the libido. Stevenson wrote the novel in a fever, finishing it in less than three days while he was deathly ill with tuberculosis. He lived, however, eight more years, dying in Samoa at the age of 44. This is a Spanish-language version. Price:
