Monroe Thompson A Long Time Dead (Bantam Crime Line) Crimeline 0553290673 / 9780553290677 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Good 0553290673 Editorial Reviews nFrom Publishers Weekly nFresh out of special forces training in the Army, Matthew Langley (as in Langley, Va., we assume) arrives in New Orleans, signs up as a security guard and immediately is put on duty in a riverfront warehouse. On his first night at work a young boy appears, shoots at Langley, who then corners him; inexplicably, Aristile Granger, Langley's new boss, pk shows up with a gun and cold-bloodedly murders the boy. Everyone, including the police, wants to drop the case, but Langley won't; he proceeds to follow leads that apparently go nowhere. Granger's beautiful wife is the only person on his side--and provides Langley with an interlude of much-needed loving and fun--but after a while, even she seems to be part of a conspiracy centered on smuggling. Thompson, author of The Blue Room , convincingly evokes a dank, forbidding side of New Orleans, and his plotting is superb: the reader doesn't know where Langley's quest is heading until the end of the book. nCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. Carlene Thompson Black for Remembrance St. Martin's Paperbacks 0312984618 / 9780312984618 MASS MARKET PAPERBACK Good 0312984618 From Publishers Weekly nTwenty years ago Caroline Webb's five-year-old daughter Hayley was kidnapped and murdered, her body decapitated and burned. The case was never solved. Caroline's second marriage, to a compassionate older man, and the birth of two children, Gregg, now 15, and Melinda, 8, have helped to ease her nightmares. This inventive and forceful psychological thriller traces the bizarre, terrifying events that convince Caroline that a new horror is emerging--Hayley has come back not only to seek revenge on her killer, but to murder her half-sister Melinda as well. She hears Hayley's voice calling to her in a shop; she sees Help me Mommy written in blood on the bathroom mirror. Caroline's husband seems only mildly concerned and the police are skeptical, but when three people with ties to the original kidnapping are murdered, one by one, detective Tom Jerome reopens the old case and finds that it was badly mishandled. First novelist Thompson controls a vigorous cast of increasingly puzzled and frightened characters, while astute detective work and even a hint of the occult keep the suspense level consistently high. nCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nFrom School Library Journal nYA-- Caroline Webb's daughter Hailey has been dead for 19 years, the victim of a brutal unresolved kidnapping and murder by decapitation. Now as Hailey's 25th birthday arrives, mysterious bouquets of black silk orchids appear beside the bodies of three murder victims who are linked obliquely to the devastating past events. Soon all of Caroline's second family is dragged into a nightmare of messages written in blood, phone calls from a piteous crying child, and a resurrected clown doll belonging to the dead girl. All the horrors of the event that tore Caroline's first marriage apart are stalking her now as danger threatens her eight-year-old daughter. Thompson has written a well-plotted thriller that includes a clever twist at the end. It's sure to please readers who pride themselves on sniffing out clues.

Sharon Thompson Going All the Way: Teenager Girls' Tales of Sex, Romance, and Pregnancy Hill & Wang Pub 0809050218 / 9780809050215 Hardcover Fine 0809050218 From Publishers Weekly nThe sexual mores of teenage girls is the subject of this disturbing investigation by feminist writer Thompson (Powers of Desire). With patience and creativity, she became the recipient of 400 teenage girls' stories. We hear in this girl talk the need of these voluble girls for romance, sometimes called love, translated into sex as a rite of passage. Their sexual histories between the ages of 13 and 17 coincided with the sexual revolution and, as Thompson's reportage supports, This tectonic shift in the rules of teenage romance generated an enormous amount of talk about... the complexities of being a sexually active adolescent. Thompson dispels some myths about population explosion as a result of their activity and challenges political stances on abortion, contraception and homosexuality. This reporting allows the girls to tell their side of the story, of their adolescence, when they know of almost no reason not to have sex. It sheds light on discrepancies between what teenage girls know and what they do. nCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. n nReview nA brave approach to one of the most emotionally and politically charged issues of our times.-Peggy Orenstein, The New York Times Book Review n nThompson, in her fascinating book lets these girls tell their own stories of romance, sex and pregnancy in their own terms . . . She reproduces them generously, along with her own judicious and politically pungent commentary . . . The sum of these stories demonstrates a huge and widening range in ways of viewing the female self.-Ellen Ross, The Nation n n[Thompson] challenges the simplistic stereotypes and savage preconceptions that have kept us dangerously ignorant.-Alix Kates Schulman n nA fascinating probe into girls' intimate lives. So much so that the reader often feels like a voyeur, overhearing a conversation that is not meant for the public.-Catherine Texier, Newsday n nTeenage girl lust is all about stories passionately told: part of the thrill lies in the breathless confession, the tiny detail, the confirmation that repetition accords. Thompson listens patiently, then . . . nails everything . . . These girls are her text, and Thompson is a very close reader.-Katherine Dieckmann, The Village Voice n nWhat makes this book so absorbing and so important is that it captures the experiences of young women at a critical moment in American history.-Joan Jacobs Brumberg, author of The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls and Fasting Girls: The History of Anorexia Nervosa n-- Review --This text refers to the Paperback edition. E. V. Thompson The Lost Years Little, Brown Book Group 0751531499 / 9780751531497 PAPERBACK Very Good 0751531499 Review n* 'No more readable book will come out of Cornwall for a long time - it confirms Thompson's place in the top flight of novelists, right there alongside Dame Daphne du Maurier and Winston Graham: the creme de la creme' - CORNISH GUARDIAN * 'Thompson has always been a good writer in his chosen field of historical fabulations and, as usual, he emphasises the historic over the romantic. His many fans won't be disappointed' - BRISTOL EVENING NEWS n nProduct Description nPerys Tremayne is not readily accepted by his family in Heligan, Cornwall, because his late parents had caused a scandal. A neighboring farmer's daughter, Annie, and her brother, Martin, the Tremayne's chauffeur, were the only two who would befriend him. But when war breaks out in 1914, Perys' life picks up-his determination and talent for flying enables him to join the RFC and become a distinguished flying ace. Although his war years and flying career go well, his love life was less successful. He is deeply attracted to Annie, but she has an understanding with Jimmy who returns from the Front blind and gas poisoned, so she feels she must go through with her marriage. Perys' next girlfriend is Grace, a nurse, but she's on the SS Sultan, torpedoed and sunk by the Germans. When war ends, Perys meets up again with Annie just after Jimmy commits suicide, unable to live a disabled life. Price:

Patricia Nachman; Andrea Thompson You and Your Only Child: The Joys, Myths, and Challenges of Raising an Only Child Harper Paperbacks 0060928964 / 9780060928964 PAPERBACK Good 0060928964 From Library Journal nAccording to popular wisdom, an only child is spoiled, lonely, and a social misfit. Not so, say psychologist Nachman and writer Thompson. The authors debunk these and dozens of other myths regarding the only child and reassure parents that an only child will do just fine. They discuss social attitudes about onlies and challenge parents to examine their own preconceptions about the one-child family. Offering practical advice on issues as diverse as the only child and friendships, the parent/child triangle, and the only child and divorce, this book provides parents with the confidence and tools needed to raise an only child as a well-adjusted, achieving, and happy individual. Recommended for child-rearing collections.?Pamela W. Bellows, Northwestern Connecticut Community-Technical Coll. Lib., Winstead nCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n nProduct Description nSingle-child families are more common than ever before, yet many parents are concerned that they are somehow cheating their child of a real family experience. Recent findings, however, suggest that only children are frequently more confident, verbal and quick to learn than children from larger families. In this reassuring and practical book, Dr. Patricia Nachman presents solid, well-supported evidence that the myths surrounding only children are just that -- myths. n nDrawing on her years of practice as a child psychologist, Nachman offers proven parenting strategies for dealing with a range of issues unique to only child-households, while helping parents build a strong, supportive relationship with their child. Filled with insight and authoritative advice, You and Your Only Child reassures parents that there is nothing unnatural about being or having an only child. Price:
